Description

We are ready to bring back our wonderful volunteers for the rest of the season! Soon, you'll hear about our new policies and procedures, including how volunteers can earn free tickets to our performances. BUT FIRST, we do have some upcoming opportunities in which you will get to see our upcoming production for free by volunteering.

Please review our volunteer sign-up for the upcoming performances of Pygmalion 2.0 (a double bill of The Companion and Pigmalione) on Saturday, March 12 (7:30 PM), Sunday, March 13 (5:00 PM), Friday, March 18 (7:30 PM), and Saturday, March 19 (7:30 PM) at Playhouse on the Square. More about the double bill first!

Exploring the themes of soulmates and perfection, this 90-minute production pairs Donizetti’s Il Pigmalione with Robert Paterson and David Cote’s delightfully naughty rom-com, The Companion

Pygmalion is based on the Classical tale of the king and sculptor, Pygmalion, originally taken from the tenth book of the Metamorphoses by Ovid. As the sculptor bemoans the possibility that he may never find the ideal of feminine beauty in real life, he creates a sculpture himself. Pygmalion falls in love with his own creation, naming her Galatea, and prays to the goddess Venus to bring her to life.

The Companion takes place in the not-so-distant future. Maya lives with her android lover named Joe, an interactive, programmable "companion" built to satisfy Maya's every need. Still, Maya wants more from Joe - a more complex and deeper connection. She enlists technician Dax to come to her home to install new experimental software, with unexpected results.

You can find out more about the two operas at www.operamemphis.org/the-companion-pygmalion.

When volunteering at Playhouse on the Square, we will provide you with a volunteer badge to designate you as an Opera Memphis volunteer. Dress neatly and comfortably (i.e. no volunteer t-shirts and no formal attire). There is no color requirement for the dress code.

Like all opera-goers to this event, you would either need to show your full vaccination record OR bring the results of a PCR test taken around 3 days before the event. If this changes, I will let you know.

Please remember to consider your personal schedule when signing up. When volunteers do not attend after signing up, they are sorely missed!

We look forward to seeing you. Thank you for sharing your time with Opera Memphis.
