Our vision is fostering lifelong literacy in the community. Our mission is empowering individuals by providing opportunities to learn literacy and  life skills.

Shelby Literacy Center supports ESOL adults from beginner to advanced, reading intervention for fourth to eighth graders, and family literacy programs throughout the Mid-South. 

• Adult English Classes
  • We provide small-group English classes for speakers of other languages. Classes learn about American holidays, discuss current events, and more. Our classes are small so everyone has a chance to talk! We begin with an assessment of your reading, writing, and speaking skills so we can get you into the right level group. 
• Citizenship
  • Shelby Literacy Center students can receive 1:1 tutoring or small group classes to help study and meet their United States citizenship goals! We provide coaching, learning resources, and support. You can learn from experienced educators and mentors. We are ready to support your American Dream! 
• Mobile Learning Career Training
  • You looking for a job or a new career, trying to improve your English, math, interviewing, or career skills? We offer 1:1 hands-on help writing resumes, job searching, and interviewing practice. 
• Betty's Book Heroes Program
  • This program is named in memory of our SLC founder, Betty Noe. This new resource is designed to get books to children and families in "book deserts" and designated literacy zones around the area. Our books are culturally and ethnically diverse and appeals to a wide age range of readers. We also support bilingual families by providing reading materials and bilingual resources to parents and caregivers.
• Community Literacy
  • No one is too old to learn something new! 
    • Our Shelby Literacy Center team hosts community literacy events throughout the year. It's a great way to promote learning and bring in our business supporters, too! 
      • Digital Literacy, Health Literacy, Financial Literacy, etc.

We have classes, conversation, and culture for ESOL adults from beginner through advanced. We also sponsor family literacy events and are involved our greater Midsouth community.
