Who We Are

Since its launch in 2014, the MMI In-Schools program has brought high-quality music instruction into classrooms across Memphis. Fellows—working musicians and teaching artists—served as both educators and mentors, sharing their expertise in genres from jazz to hip-hop to classical. Over nearly a decade, the program reached thousands of students each year across as many as 60 Memphis schools, supporting skill development, creative growth, and social-emotional learning. During that time, MMI invested nearly $11 million directly into school-based arts education, at no cost to our school partners.

What We Do

Engage youth with connections to Music, Cultural Awareness, College and Career Pathways, Leadership Development and the Arts. In 2024, MMI’s In-Schools team launched a six-phase Reimagining process. The work began with deep reflection on the decade-long impact of the In-Schools program—its role in student growth, its emphasis on creative connection, and the powerful mentorship model Fellows embodied. Building on that foundation, the team gathered insights from more than 1,000 students, families, educators, community partners, and national organizations through surveys and in-person conversations. These voices helped shape a bold new vision for arts engagement: one grounded in youth voice, equity, and sustainability, and centered on creativity as a tool for connection, self-expression, and possibility.
