The Ed Murphey Classic

Who We Are

The mission of the Ed Murphey Classic is to empower Memphis youth to pursue healthy lifestyles through track & field competition and FREE clinics and coaching! The annual Ed Murphey Classic gives youth athletes in the Memphis area an opportunity to meet and be inspired by World-class athletes. Ultimately, we aim to Keep Our Kids On The Right Track! The meet is in honor of Ed Murphey, from Brownsville, Tn. He competed for The Tennessee Volunteers from 1954-57. He was An All-American, SEC Champion and Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame inductee. His family began the Ed Murphey Classic ten years ago and are excited for all it has done and will to continue to do to bring recognition to the young, talented track and field athletes in Memphis.

What We Do

The Ed Murphey Classic brings world-renowned athletes to Memphis as a stop on the USA Track and Field Tour. The nationally recognized event begins Friday, July 10th at the University of Memphis, then continues Saturday, July 11th with The Murphey Mile, Pole Vault on Beale Street, and Shot Put in Handy Park. Don't miss out on the event of the summer! Get up close to the action by volunteering and having a small part in athletes prepping to the road to LA Olympics in 2028, while also giving back to the youth of Memphis. Through hosting the Ed Murphey Classic we fulfill our mission by leveraging the track and field event to fund and support youth development programs. Through free coaching, clinics, the Murphey Track Club, school partnerships, community outreach, and youth competitions, the organization creates opportunities for Memphis youth to develop healthy habits, athletic skills, confidence, and positive relationships that help keep them on a successful path.
