If you like volunteering outdoors, learning about native plants, or just want to help out your community this is the volunteer opportunity for you.
Privet Pull at Lichterman Nature Center/ 5992 Quince Rd. Memphis TN. 38119
Please join us Saturday morning February 25 from 8:30 am until 12:00 pm, and help the Nature Center get rid of exotic, invasive plants. Privet, as well as the English Ivy, Japanese Honeysuckle and Floribunda Roses, threaten to compromise the use of the 65-acre property as an outdoor classroom for interpretation of native wildlife. When left unchecked, invasive exotic plants outcompete plants indigenous to this area and reduce plant and animal diversity.
Winter is the preferred time for control measures because Evergreens like Privet and English Ivy are easy to spot when the vast majority of native trees and shrubs are bare of leaves. Additionally, irritant insects and snakes are also dormant in the winter.
Volunteers should wear sturdy shoes or hiking boots, long pants and lightweight long-sleeve shirts, and dress for the weather. We also encourage volunteers to bring work gloves, and sun screen. Water and tools will be provided. This opportunity will take place rain or shine, so please dress for the weather. If you have a team please put the number of members in your group. Volunteers will need to sign a City of Memphis waiver to participate.
